Background of the study
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses significant health challenges globally, with treatment outcomes heavily influenced by socio-cultural attitudes. In Umuahia North, socio-cultural beliefs shape perceptions of CKD and its treatment, often affecting patients’ adherence to prescribed medical regimens (Ifeanyi, 2023). Traditional beliefs and misconceptions about the causes and cures of CKD frequently lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment (Amadi, 2024). This study appraises the socio-cultural attitudes toward CKD treatment, examining how cultural norms, religious beliefs, and community practices interact with modern medical approaches. The research further investigates the impact of these attitudes on treatment efficacy, healthcare-seeking behavior, and overall patient outcomes, highlighting the need for culturally tailored interventions to improve CKD management (Okoro, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Umuahia North, persistent socio-cultural misconceptions about chronic kidney disease hinder timely diagnosis and effective treatment. Negative attitudes and reliance on traditional healing methods contribute to treatment non-compliance and adverse health outcomes (Ifeanyi, 2023; Okoro, 2025). The conflict between cultural beliefs and modern medical practices creates barriers to optimal CKD management. This study seeks to address these challenges by exploring the influence of socio-cultural attitudes on CKD treatment and identifying potential avenues for harmonizing traditional beliefs with evidence-based healthcare practices.

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of culture and healthcare in CKD treatment, offering valuable insights for developing culturally responsive health policies. The findings are expected to guide clinicians and policymakers in designing interventions that bridge traditional beliefs with modern treatment methods, ultimately enhancing patient care (Amadi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to appraising socio-cultural attitudes toward chronic kidney disease treatment within Umuahia North Local Government, focusing exclusively on local cultural dynamics.
